    TLDR

Roon, a pseudonymous OpenAI technical staff member, argued that PauseAI's overreaction to a UN blue helmet meme posted by Seb Krier reflects the movement's poor aesthetics and has discredited AI safety slowdown advocacy. He explicitly separated PauseAI from the broader rat, LessWrong, and Lighthaven communities, many of whose members he respects. Other AI safety figures including Ryan Greenblatt and David Krueger called violence allegations against PauseAI misleading, noting the group expelled an individual who attempted to firebomb Sam Altman's house and rejected any link to the meme.

@tszzlthis sort of hysterics over seb posting a UN blue helmet meme is pretty representative of the aesthetics of the ⏸️ movement, who have thoroughly salted the semantic earth of slowdown. i think if the acausal basilisk from the future genuinely paid people to discredit the idea of ai safety it couldn’t have done a better job as far as I know the pause ai meme space inspired a guy to try and firebomb sam altman’s house - they have very few legs to stand on concern trolling about violent incitement. indeed all other cases of personal violence in this space have been targeted at technology executives or infrastructure
@DavidSKrueger@tszzl "as far as I know the pause ai meme space inspired a guy to try and firebomb sam altman’s house" This is ridiculous. Pause AI kicked the guy out of their discord. Nobody there supported his unhinged calls for violence.
@RyanGreenblatt@tszzl IDK if this is representative of the broader ⏸️ stuff, but I agree this response is dumb and unreasonable. This isn't representative of the full set of people focused on AI safety. Based on public info, I think it's probably misleading to say that pause AI inspired the firebomb.
@wsisaac💯 @sebkrier is perhaps one of the most thoughtful and broadest thinkers on the platform.
@iamtraskI believe that Seb has no intention for violence and his message (while memish) should not be mistaken for any other position. He has good in his heart and mind for AI and the world.
