The value of understanding a hypothetical cancer cure's mechanism

A poster says almost any Stage 4 cancer patient would find human understanding of a working cure's mechanism irrelevant.

TLDR

Sharing a slide from Terence Tao's “Math 2.0” public lecture at Caltech, a poster argued that if a cancer cure actually worked, almost any Stage 4 cancer patient would consider human understanding of its mechanism irrelevant.

Andrew Curran@AndrewCurran_This is a slide from Terence Tao's 'Math 2.0' public lecture yesterday evening at Caltech. I am highly confident that, if the cure actually worked, almost any Stage 4 cancer patient would tell you that human comprehension of its mechanism is completely irrelevant to them.1h
Bojan Tunguz@tunguzIf a committee of human experts somehow tried to *prevent* patients from getting access to such a drug, I’m pretty sure they’d be dead within days.1h
Chubby♨️@kimmonismusI fully agree. And this is the best proof that we simply cannot hold back on publishing research releases or show consideration for individual sensitivities when the health and survival of many are at stake.1h
Victor Veitch 🔸@victorveitchThis example is really bizarre (if it's actually from Tao) because it's a case where obviously the patient doesn't care about understanding, and also virtually everybody who currently receives chemo is basically accepting on faith that it's a good idea based on consensus from human experts that are (as a rule) less reliable than the AI! On the other hand, understanding how it works is valuable in as much as it opens up avenues for further understanding. Like, the argument for "it's valuable to have a clear explanation of the mechanisms here" is actually stronger than for math!57m
Teortaxes▶️ (DeepSeek 推特🐋铁粉 2023 – ∞)@teortaxesTexI have long been saying that Terry Tao makes me doubt the existence of general intelligence44m
