It restores central vision in dry macular degeneration patients
@maxhodak_ hell yeah — huge congrats to the whole team
@maxhodak_ Congrats! This is amazing.
@maxhodak_ Huge congratulations, man!
@maxhodak_ Woohoo!!! Congrats Max! 🎉🎉
Medicine gives us endless hard problems to solve, and a key to our thesis is that often the best answers will come from technologies that allow us to avoid needing to solve some of these difficult biology problems in the first place. We can't regenerate photoreceptors, but we can inject a visual signal into the retina and get it into the brain, just like cochlear implants do for hearing. There is a contrarian lens on all of medicine in this perspective that I think will turn out to apply to more diseases than it may appear at first!
We also have parallel news on the US, where we've received Humanitarian Use Device designation from FDA, which means we can use the Humanitarian Device Exemption approval pathway. While it's uncertain, it's possible PRIMA could be available in the US early to mid next year for very late stage vision loss patients. https://science.xyz/news/hud-designation/
Big news today. Science's PRIMA visual prosthesis, our retinal implant for macular degeneration, has received its CE mark, which means marketing approval in Europe. This is a huge milestone to begin to have a device like this commercially available to regular patients. 1/
It will roll out by country, and initially we're planning to start slow. We want surgeons to get practiced with the procedure and learn from each other before we start trying to push for scale. More information will be available soon on specifics. 2/ https://science.xyz/news/ce-mark/
PRIMA has a website of its own now, too: https://prima.science.xyz/
@maxhodak_ Incredible.
