SFI working group explores how humans understand mathematical proofs
The Santa Fe Institute says its October working group brought together mathematicians, cognitive scientists, computer scientists and philosophers.
TLDR
The Santa Fe Institute says its working group, co-organized by SFI External Professor Simon DeDeo, examined what it means to understand a proof. DeDeo says the question matters more now that machines are proving theorems once considered at the outer edge of human possibility. The institute says little is known about what happens in the mind when people solve proofs.
