TLDR

The partnership announcement says the goal is easier shopping and checkout in Muse, with more partnerships planned. A post discussing the Meta–Shopify deal says it will enable Shop Pay checkout across Shopify stores. It also describes Shopify as sharing a merchant’s product catalog with AI shopping tools, including Muse and ChatGPT, so merchants do not have to upload and maintain product data separately for each service.

Rohan Paul@rohanpaul_aiShopify plans to bring Muse into its stores, while Amazon blocked Muse agent. Today Meta and Shopify they announced a partnership to enable Shop Pay checkout across Shopify stores. Shopify already lets eligible stores selling to US customers use a Shopify-powered direct checkout on Meta, with orders attributed to Meta. Shopify acts as a middle layer between the merchant and multiple AI shopping services and keeps a merchant’s product data in one catalog, then shares that same catalog with AI shopping tools like Muse or ChatGPT. So merchants don’t need to upload and maintain their products separately for each AI service. The merchant maintains the product data once, while Shopify handles much of the connection to each AI service.20d

Hiten Shah@hnshahMuse can now shop for you. At Meta Connect yesterday, Meta said it can shop across Shopify and pay with Shop Pay or PayPal. It is also adding connectors for Walmart, Best Buy, Sephora, Wayfair and others. Once money moves, the permissions get a lot more specific. At checkout, Muse is supposed to stop and show you the exact purchase before anything is bought. If it uses the built-in wallet, Meta says the payment can be a single-use card limited to one merchant and one amount for a short window. Muse never gets your underlying card number. Meta also said Muse can operate apps on your Mac and keep working after you walk away. Soon it gets its own email address and comes to smart glasses, where it can help with what you're looking at. Amazon already blocked Muse from shopping on its site. So my approval is not enough. The merchant still gets a say. I want to know all of that before I let an agent spend money and keep working across my devices. Friday at 10 AM PT I'm doing AI Permissions 101. I'm bringing the actual permission screens from Muse, Grok Bot, Claude and others. The failures are coming too. https://www.hiten.com/ai-permissions-10117d

Pete Koomen@koomenI now mostly use the Instacart UI to review shopping carts that Muse has filled for me. I'd like to be able to speak my feedback to muse while I look at the contents, watching them update as muse makes changes and occasionally tweaking by hand when it’s easier. I want UIs like this for everything: surfaces designed from scratch for collaborating with an agent to get things done together without giving up control over the output. The interesting question here is who will build this. Presumably there is someone at Instacart working on an Instacart Agent right now, but I don't want to juggle a bunch of purpose-built specific-thing-agents. I want one assistant that can do everything for me. It seems obvious that this form factor will win. Meta could probably build a great UI for grocery shopping with Muse, but do they actually want to rebuild all of Instacart's business? Eventually, maybe, but in the meantime they'll face competitive pressure from other assistants that do a better job of integrating with Instacart. This suggests there's some optimal partnership boundary between companies building brains, like meta, and companies building hands, like Instacart. On one side, the brains with the largest number of hands will win, and the other, the hands that work with the largest number of brains will win. If this is right, it seems like a dynamic that will favor incumbents on both sides on of the brain/hand divide.14d

a16z@a16zMarketplaces earn their money when you browse, not when you buy. An AI assistant that shops for you skips the browsing. Ad revenue vs operating income (2025): - Amazon retail: 2x - DoorDash: 1.9x - Instacart: 2.2x AI assistants don't need to rebuild Amazon's warehouses to hit Amazon's profits.
