AI labs' policy proposals and the debate over sensible regulation

One commenter sees better odds of sensible AI regulation, arguing that labs' policy proposals are more sophisticated than those of past tech companies, including Meta in the early-to-mid 2010s.

    TLDR

Supporting AI labs' efforts on safety and security need not mean endorsing their governance proposals or the wider safety movement, one commenter argues. They favor dialogue involving Anthropic, OpenAI and SpaceX, while warning that heavy-handed federal regulation is likely unless the industry gets its act together. A reply takes a more optimistic view, arguing that the labs' policy proposals are more sophisticated than those of previous tech companies. It credits those proposals and broad acceptance of AI's spread with making sensible regulation significantly more likely in the long run than in earlier tech waves.

@herbiebradleyFor me, it's notable that both labs policy proposals (eg the concrete PDFs their policy teams put out) are far more sophisticated and thought out than basically any prior technology company. Much more so, for example, than Meta's when they were starting to get government attention in the early to mid 2010s. Because of this, and other dynamics like proliferation/diffusion of AI being a thing generally accepted by all parties, I think the likelihood of sensible regulation is significantly higher than any prior tech wave in the long run.
