    TLDR

Geoffrey Irving, Chief Scientist at the UK AI Security Institute, posted a reply on the topic of AI governance. He asked what would follow if MIRI and similar groups succeed in slowing AI development or even reversing progress. Irving said he is optimistic that such outcomes are achievable once public awareness rises. He added that even major success in these efforts would likely leave only 10 or 20 years until ASI because algorithmic advances continue at a steady pace.

@geoffreyirvingSecond, what if MIRI-the-governance org and similar policy work succeeds in slowing AI down, even reversing progress? I am optimistic this is doable as people wake up, but even dramatic success may mean only 10 or 20 years to ASI, due to the steady rate of algorithmic progress.
