    TLDR

Multiple posts quote Pathfounders claiming Demis Hassabis tried to leave Google alongside Jeff Dean. The same sources say Alphabet management refused over fears the announcement would hurt the share price, which later fell five percent after related news. As a compromise Hassabis accepted a chair role instead of departing. The reports add that he is now expected to leave within a year. All details trace to unnamed industry sources cited by Pathfounders and repeated across X accounts including @firstadopter and @Meer_AIIT. No direct statement from Hassabis or Google appears in the packet.

@firstadopter"Pathfounders has learned from industry sources that Hassabis wanted to leave at the same time as Dean, but Google management felt the news would cause a collapse in its share price. Indeed, Google’s stock fell 5 per cent following the announcement above. Instead, Hassabis was persuaded to bump up (or down) to the Chair role, allowing the organisation to settle for a while until he can exit in a dignified manner."
@kimmonismusIf this turns out to be true, the situation is much worse than expected. According to pathfounders, Demis Hassabis actually wanted to leave along side Dean, but was convinced to stay because google was scared their stocks would crash (which would probably be true).
@AndrewCurran_@firstadopter I assume he would go straight to Isomorphic, it seems to be what he actually wants to do.
@Meer_AIITaccording to Pathfounders "Hassabis will have left Google within a year." Demis Hassabis reportedly wanted to leave google entirely at the same time as jeff dean. > according to pathfounders' sources google management blocked it fearing the stock would collapse. > the chair role is a compromise so he can exit "in a dignified manner" later. context: hassabis stepped down as deepmind CEO this week, koray kavukcuoglu took over as SVP and jeff dean left to start a google-backed science startup. google stock still fell 5 percent.

@BlackHCAnother interesting read. If this is true, I hope we'll eventually here what happened in a sequel to The Infinity Machine one day 🤞 (assuming AGI/ASI goes well 😅)
@zephyr_z9The jig is up for Google ☹️
@bindureddyWow, the Google rumors just get juicy by the hour The latest one is Demis Hassabis also wanted to quit!! It must have gotten hella political for so many people to jump ship 😲
@tunguzNot really. Demis has never been big on LLMs to say the least. In my book this is a good sign that Google’s AI efforts could now be fully focused on the same approach that the other AI labs have perfected, without undue burdens of the legacy DeepMind mindset. They still have way more compute, data, and reach than any other single company in the world. A few highly motivated high agency operators could do wonders with that kind of setup, if unencumbered by the organizational bureaucratic crap. We’ll see if they can pull it off.
@teortaxesTexWho was it that said how the proles are misreading the situation and Demis is actually just more comfortable in the [cuck] Science Chair? Some respected account This is a crude and simple world, alas
