Apple plans stricter Full Disk Access controls as AI-agent risks grow

Future macOS controls will require very explicit user action before an app receives broad system access.

    TLDR

Apple plans additional macOS controls for granting Full Disk Access, a permission that can expose files, mail, messages and browsing history. The company says future grants will require very explicit user action. Apple links the change to growing risks from increasingly capable and autonomous AI agents, but has not provided a rollout date or interface details.

Apple said on Oct. 2 that it plans additional macOS controls for granting Full Disk Access. The permission largely bypasses other privacy controls so backup apps can function, according to the company.

Apple says some developers use Full Disk Access in ways that may expose files, mail, messages and browsing history without users fully understanding the scope. For communication apps, the company says that access can also affect the privacy of people the user communicates with.

    A more explicit permission step

Going forward, Apple says users will be able to grant an app this level of access only through “very explicit user action.” The statement does not specify a rollout date, macOS version or how the new permission flow will work.

The planned controls apply to apps seeking Full Disk Access. Apple identifies AI agents as one reason for added caution, saying the risks of broad access will grow as agents become more capable and autonomous. The company says its goal is to help users understand those risks before deciding whether to grant access.

Bloomberg reported the plan after Apple published its developer statement.

@krossfatI see it a bit differently, because Full Disk Access was originally meant for backup tools like Time Machine, not local AI models scanning your entire personal drive. When autonomous agents get unrestrained access to emails, messages, and files, a single prompt injection or bad update becomes a huge exposure risk. Tightening this is a necessary security baseline, not overkill.3h

@signullli’ve posted about this before but this is a pretty meaningful risk for the entire agent ecosystem. a lot of these products work by asking for extremely broad access, syncing huge amounts of data from your mac, reading messages, mail, files, browser history, etc. imessage agents in particular are often built on access that apple never really designed as a durable platform. as personal agents become more common, there’s a very real chance apple keeps locking this down, adds more granular permissions, or forces developers onto sanctioned apis.1h
@TimSweeneyEpicIs Apple now coming after competing AI assistants on Mac, the only Apple platform they haven’t already kneecapped them on?1h
