The role of deployment safety testing in AI disaster risk

A post uses a hypothetical AI disaster on the scale of Nepal’s floods to ask whether blame would lie with AI’s intelligence or people deploying it without safety testing.

    TLDR

A user distinguishes a hypothetical AI disaster on the scale of Nepal’s floods as catastrophic, not existential. They argue that if careless deployment without safety testing caused such a disaster, that should be fixed first—and claim that addressing existential risk would follow.

@dileeplearningImagine that AI creates a disaster at the scale of Nepal floods. That would be an extremely sad event, catastrophic, not existential. Now, what would you attribute that scale of disaster to?: 1) The smartness of AI? 2) The carelessness of people who deployed AI without safety testing. If it is 2), then fix that first. Fixing of existential risk will follow.
