According to a Handelsblatt report based on multiple sources, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman held confidential talks with Chancellor Merz, Vice Chancellor Klingbeil and Digital Minister Wildberger starting September 24 last year about building an AI data center in Germany with up to 1 gigawatt capacity, which could cost a double-digit billion dollar amount, on the condition of a location near the French border to import French nuclear power and get around Germany's high energy costs The project failed, at least for now, per the report, as further talks brought no progress and lacked detail, with a senior official saying Altman promised "the moon" before his team took the plans back and another senior official suspecting he "simply wanted to test" the government's reaction
