> Account based in: the Netherlands yeah, what could Russia know about cloud infrastructure. 145 million is just not enough for this game. They're probably 20 years away technologically from the likes of Nebius.

Many users dismissed Yandex's AI like Alice and its cloud infrastructure as ineffective jokes due to poor context retention and GPU limits, while one praised its clones as superior to European options.

Explanation of the joke: Nebius is a Yandex reskin. Prior to the war, Russia probably had a more developed IT sector than the EU combined, even without "global talent" (Indians, Chinese) that Europeans rely on for basic functioning. But yes we gave up on AI.

Alisa is crazy dumb it's very sad. I mean, yeah Russia isn't allowed to have GPUs, and at least I get music and basic voice controls for ≈nothing, but it's like below 0.6B in LLM terms. Also instantly discards context. What could have been… They can train DS-style models btw

@teortaxesTex I don’t think there’s any measure by which the IT sector would’ve been ‘more developed’ (Nokia and Ericsson alone would top most Russian blue chips), unless strictly limited to consumer-facing apps (there EU clones of US apps went extinct by ~2012 or so).

@teortaxesTex russia's it was mostly yandex clones on western stacks with talent already leaking out while eu still files more ai patents per year

@teortaxesTex Well, before the war/covid the EU wasn’t really that dependent on overseas talent either. The EU/US difference in salaries was there already in the 2010s, but less dramatic than now, and US big techs didn’t have that many offices in the EU -> fewer intracompany transfers.

@teortaxesTex Europe doesn't have to develop its own IT most of EU companies run on US infrastructure, hardware and software, I would have preferred if they did develop their own stuff.

@teortaxesTex @AIBlancos http://Yandex.Cloud was joke and is joke now (even comparing to OVH\Hetzner, let alone AWS\Azure). Nebius is good neocloud, has nothing to do with Russia

@teortaxesTex Though many EU and Swiss-based software companies, including extremely successful ones, are owned by Russians or people of Russian ancestry and until the war maintained offshoring/backoffice shops in Russia, so it also depends on how you classify those!
