terrible. 20 yrs ago, the internet was full of hobbyist blogs and forums. over time, these have been replaced by paywalled substacks and private discord channels, each a walled garden. google's decision to prioritize AI just makes it less likely ppl will create free, public info

Google is essentially killing search traffic, thereby removing the biggest source of income for sites. Worse; it is in fact removing the most *stable* source of income. Because newsfeeds are, by nature, unpredictable; whereas search usually provided a base for traffic. /3

The result is obvious. Some sites cannot afford to operate without that base, and so shrink. Other sites cannot afford the same staffing, so let people go, and reduce output. In a very strange way, Google is essentially trying to kill the internet. /4

If sites either shut down or stop producing as much content, there are less web-pages for the AI to navigate when answering your question. The accuracy of Google's AI search... naturally diminishes. Some questions become unanswerable, some answers become out of date. /7

If search is dead, there's no incentive for a site to keep that list up-to-date. Which means when somebody asks a question like "List every Order 66 survivor," the AI is navigating pages that haven't been updated. The list it generates will be wrong. /9

The latter is a major problem. Let me give you a relatively harmless example: When I worked at ScreenRant, I maintained a single page that listed every Jedi Master, Knight, or Padawan who survived Order 66. We kept it up-to-date because it performed well in search. /8

imo, these are some of the reasons:

— rise of social media, specifically twitter, instagram, and tiktok — shift to smartphones — demise of rss feeds — advertising money drying up because companies shifted their marketing budgets to other means, such as paying influencers behind the scenes for "collaborations" (basically shilling) — internet became increasingly hostile in general, which moved many people into private channels they could regulate (e.g., kick people out if they acted like an asshole)

Without succinct search results, replaced by guesses, you've destroyed accuracy & legitimacy.

Which in this case could be form of control. People without solid results will forever miss the mark. Which works if you might be the target.
