It's the wrong damned unit.

Elon clearly has a deep seated conviction that AI is just a matter of compute + data and all you need to do is engineering to scale up models.

That's correct if you look at the problem from orbit but it ignores the enormous quality and performance differences from algorithmic details. Elon doesn't think AI researchers are real, so xAI is doomed to burn compute for mediocre results until he comes round.
