    TLDR

Brian Roemmele posted about Anthropic releasing a content checker and applying C2PA metadata to files that Claude generates or touches. He also noted invisible statistical watermarks woven into the model's text. Replies from Colin Glassey and others stated that Anthropic has no moral right to claim ownership of LLM outputs. They argued a machine cannot hold copyright and that the text draws from sources users could access directly.

@cglassey_authorGreat essay, Brian! Anthropic has no moral right to assert all text output from their LLMs is “their text”. 1) A machine cannot claim copyright over anything. 2) A software program cannot claim ownership over anything it produces because a software program is a machine. 3) A company which creates a software program which generates text CANNOT claim any right of ownership over anything produced by it’s software. 4) Since Anthropic has NO legal claim of authorship, they have no right to watermark their software’s output. They cannot copyright the output of Claude or any other LLMs they make. Software cannot create anything which gets copyright protection, only people can.
@Sammygirl252I agree with Brian: watermarking an AI to show you accessed it isn't fair. The idea is yours, not the AI's; it gets all its info from sources you could have used, but you chose AI instead because it does it faster. The point is that AI knowledge comes from us; it shouldn't be watermarked when information isn't owned. The U.S. does not require tracking for this purpose; it should not be watermarked in the U.S.
