    TLDR

A video posted by Eren Chen shows the 400m champion running in slow motion at the World Humanoid Robot Games. Herbie Bradley replied that RL giveth and RL taketh away. David Ha noted the gait recalls novel locomotion policies found in MuJoCo environments, except these work in the real world. The posts treat the footage as evidence that reinforcement learning both produces and limits the robot's physical performance.

@hardmaruReminds me of novel locomotion policies discovered in MuJoCo environments, except that they work in the real world!
@hlntnrMost humanoid robotics teams add extra constraints to make sure the robots learn to walk & run in human-like ways—otherwise it's too freaky I'm guessing even this running form is not fully unconstrained, aka it would prob look even weirder if it were purely optimizing for speed!
@TrungTPhanAn engineer that built this 400m-running humanoid robot explained the wild form: ▫️initially designed it with human arm swing ▫️but swinging arms too much put heavy load on shoulder joints, led to overheating (and robot couldn’t finish 400m) ▫️robot invented the new running style on its own (hands held up near face to reduce shoulder load while legs could keep trucking) ▫️per Global Times, “in a simulated learning environment…the team gave the robot continuous rewards, and through repeated iteration on the data it gradually settled into a posture that suited it better.” *** Full read here (fascinating): https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202608/1368875.shtml
@DanielleFongjust preregistering my guess that this isn't any faster but it's a great ab workout and good efficiency
@krishnanrohitThis is the most riveting race I have ever watched
