‘Principles and Practice of Deep Representation Learning’ proposes a theory of how deep networks learn

Its authors say the open-source book uses optimization and information theory to explain neural network design.

TLDR

Co-author Yi Ma frames the book and an accompanying course around three ideas: learning aims to find data representations that maximize information gain; deep network architectures are unrolled iterative optimization algorithms; and updates to network parameters aim to make those algorithms more efficient. The authors say the open-source textbook uses optimization and information theory to make deep networks easier to understand.

Yi Ma@YiMaTweetsAfter years of effort, the following three points are our converging and unifying understanding about deep representation learning: 1. The objective of learning (or intelligence) is to learn a representation of a data distribution that maximizes the information gain. 2. Deep network architectures themselves are unrolled iterative optimization algorithms to achieve this objective. 3. Backward learning or forward updating the network parameters is to improve the efficiency of the chosen algorithm/architecture. This is essentially the gist of our new book and the new course on deep representation learning: https://ma-lab-berkeley.github.io/deep-representation-learning-book/1h
