    Who invented convolutional neural networks?

A post credits Kunihiko Fukushima’s 1979 architecture and argues that later CNN advances relied heavily on computing power.

    TLDR

A post argues that Kunihiko Fukushima established CNNs’ basic architecture in 1979. It points to Wei Zhang and colleagues’ use of backpropagation for two-dimensional CNNs in 1988 and Yann LeCun and colleagues’ 1989 zip-code recognition work. The author says his team made max-pooling CNNs fast on NVIDIA GPUs in 2011, but argues that scaling earlier ideas with better hardware is different from inventing CNNs.
