    Claude starts merging Chat and Cowork into one experience

    The Claude team says the update brings Docs, Slides and Design into every conversation, with outputs users can edit and download.

    TLDR

    On September 16, 2026, the Claude team announced that Chat and Cowork were starting to merge, with a gradual rollout planned over the following weeks. The team says Claude will choose between quick answers and deeper work based on each prompt, while users can stop, redirect or adjust its approach.

    The update also brings Docs, Slides and Design into conversations. The team says users can edit the outputs and export presentations as PowerPoint or PDF.

    The team also says Claude can use local files and apps while your computer is open, then keep working on its own cloud computer when you close it.

Based on your prompt, Claude will decide whether to give a quick answer or do deeper agentic work, and what kind of output best fits the task.
