Anthropic yanked access to its two newest models just days after launch when a US export control order blocked any foreign national from touching them, including the company's own overseas employees, so the only way to stay compliant was a full worldwide shutdown while every other Claude model stayed online.
AI was ONE huge export product that the US absolutely dominated over the past few years. Now we are facing the prospect of completely and utterly sabotaging it.
Well this is massive:
- Every non-US company sees how they can be cut off from US vendors with a snap of a finger. Non-US vendors getting free advertisement
- What does this mean for US AI labs’ offices and employees outside the US? Reads pretty draconian
What a mess
The directive treats access by foreign nationals as a deemed export, so Anthropic had to disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for every customer everywhere instead of applying narrower blocks.
No details have surfaced on the specific national security concerns, any timeline for reinstatement, or what happens next for affected users and international staff.
Many users criticized US export controls forcing Anthropic to suspend Fable 5 and Mythos 5 access as self-sabotaging American AI dominance and pushing users toward Chinese models.
Ok if the only answer to all this is billions of Mistral subsidies, I’m out.
Not having any EU competitive labs (plural intended) is about to get very painful.
The most interesting thing in tech: Commerce bans foreign nationals—including Anthropic's own staff!—from using Fable. So the company shuts it down for all. Anthropic keeps warning AI is existentially dangerous but then keeps shipping. The government wants AI built here but incoherent regulations just derailed a leading product. It's not going well, folks.

@tunguz What I find funny is that the US loves it's guns and freedom. Wanting to export them to the world regardless of how dangerous they are. But when it finally stumbles upon intelligence it locks it down faster than a a king puts a chastity belt on his virgin daughter.
@tunguz Trump is in his anti Midas era. Everything he touches gets ruined. This clearly wrecks the virtuous cycle where impressive new frontier models stoke interest in newer training and inference hardware. Jensen should give Trump a call before all is lost.
