    TLDR

Sriram Krishnan wrote that several AI safety and alignment organizations remain unsure how to interpret data center protests and have not incorporated them into existing timelines. He described two positions among them: one favoring US data centers over Chinese alternatives, and another viewing reduced data center growth as a stand-in for broader slowdown goals. Beff Jezos replied that doomers risk aiding China through deceleration efforts. Minh Nhat Nguyen added thoughts on midterm election effects and trade timing.

@sriramktalking to a few ai safety / alignment organizations and find broadly they are not sure what to make of the data center protests - also it’s not something that has shown up in any timelines or predictions. I see a split between A) “we probably need data centers in US than in China” B) “less data centers is a proxy for a slow down in capabilities and that could be a good thing “
@beffjezosDoomers realizing they are useful idiots for China if they go full Decel
@menhguin@sriramk i briefly considered organising anti-AI protests and for the large part i think they'll do whatever they want anyway. I do not really think ai safety people should or can try to control them bc ai safety people are generally not very charismatic.
@BrianRoemmeleThe anti-AI and soon anti humanoid robot with anti data center narratives have coalesced into a new Neo Luddite political group that if not properly addressed will forge a massive hard left and hard right alliance with middle America holding it together. No action by major companies with clear honest dialogue will assure 2028 will be a president and cabinet that will send the US to the Stone Age in technology. The Anti Clanker movement will be in the streets soon with masked crowds dismantling robots with hammers. I talked about this 10 years ago, 7 years ago, 5 years ago, 3 years ago, 1 year ago and the last 8 months. This is not move fast and break things startup culture this is far bigger it is just that the folks running these AI and tech companies have not figured this out yet. They will.

Many accounts rejected the claim that AI safety protests against data centers aid China as a spent psyop or blind spot, while a few welcomed slower capability growth for giving alignment teams more time.
