Self-driving’s potential gains beyond cheaper rides

A commenter argues that vehicle utilization and peak-demand needs limit rideshare savings, while fewer incidents and less parking may matter more.

    TLDR

A commenter disputes projections of large rideshare savings from self-driving cars. They say models they’ve seen suggest costs could fall by roughly half over 10 years, with vehicle utilization and peak-demand capacity limiting the savings. In their view, the bigger impact would come from fewer incidents, smarter routing, more fluid traffic and less need for parking.

@AltimorMath is wrong here -- every model I've seen pegs self driving at cutting rideshare cost by ~2x, and that's over 10y. Utilization + need to provision for peak kill you. Decentralized ops (the Tesla model) will massively improve economics (why they'll beat Waymo) but this too is a ways out. The biggest impact of self driving will be through 2nd order effects -- much fewer incidents, smarter routing + more fluid traffic dynamics (car chains start moving like train convoys), less need for parking etc.
