Thiel exaggerates for effect — calling the Pope a “Chinese communist agent” is pure theater. But his diagnosis is spot on. I live in Germany and watch over-regulation kill innovation in real time. While Europe sets up AI ethics committees, China builds.
AI is the most important strategic technology since nuclear. You don’t win that race by slowing down. The real question isn’t left vs right. It’s: who writes the rules of AI — Washington or Beijing? Because someone will.

Peter Thiel is deliberately distorting the Pope’s words.
The Pope’s speech was not about regulating AI for the sake of regulation, or out of some irrational fear of technology. His point was that he fears the history of slavery could repeat itself - only this time in a far more terrifying form, one that may become impossible to abolish.
Because a group of people like Thiel, using AI, are trying to build a system that could become worse than slavery. The Pope was warning precisely about this: we must control whose hands AI ends up in, so that people like Thiel cannot realize their dream of building techno-feudalism - something they barely even hide anymore.
