    TLDR

Ivan Zhao, co-founder and CEO of Notion, posted on X listing three questions about AI. He asked how to grasp what is going on with AI at an intuitive level, why AI works at all and whether it counts as a kind of life or civilization, and what separates a silicon neural network from brain neurons or a network of bees. Zhao stated he had just finished the book What Is Intelligence by Blaise Agüera and attached four photos of its pages.

@ivanhzhaoHow do you grasp what’s going on with AI at an intuitive level? Why do they work at all? Are they a kind of life? (Or, “civilization”?) What separates a silicon neural network, vs your brain neurons, vs a network of bees? I just finished “What Is Intelligence” by @blaiseaguera. Most books on consciousness and the origin of life read like business books that are all “just fine.” I really enjoyed this one. It connects most of the questions that matter (at least it tries!) It’s current (2025 AI capabilities, written by someone who built modern ML systems), and there’s a beautiful web version you can point your agent at to cheat (but don’t skip the actual reading for understanding!) I think it can provide some grounding and perspectives for a fast-moving world.
