for day to day stuff 80% of the time a Chinese model is fine

unfortunately the last 20% is also extremely annoying and can be worth the 10x difference

You’d be shocked by how many people in think tanks/academia/government/“strategic classes,” including in the U.S., are convinced that Chinese models are now “good enough” and leading the world in adoption. Meanwhile, the reality I see is a fairly wide, and still widening, gap.

@deanwball @james1ach The Chinese OSS systems are certainly adopted by research groups worldwide. My impression is that they are the strongest of the open weights models, and that is what university researchers care about. Perhaps that explains this to some extent.
