There are plenty of conspiracy theories about data centers out there now, which sucks. But there are also very legitimate concerns (yes, including light and noise pollution and paving over farmland) and this condescending response does the AI industry no favors if they want to get local communities on board.

Today I had one idiot “explain” to me that data centers create “light pollution”, and another one explain that they “superheat water”, whatever that might mean. I was also told that they “destroy farmland.” The existing set of invented problems weren’t enough, so the lunatics are off on Reddit forums making up new ones whole cloth. Apparently having the invented problems make coherent sense isn’t even considered valuable anymore, the more bizarre the complaints are, the more they seem to spread among the marching morons. I imagine that very soon we’re going to be told that data centers cause infertility and bad breath.
