    TLDR

Education reporter Cayla Bamberger posted that NYC public schools will announce an artificial-intelligence policy expected to ban generative AI use by students in 2-K through eighth grade this school year, according to official slides. A linked Reuters post reported Mayor Zohran Mamdani saying children need teachers and human connection to learn. Posts on X split between praise for protecting foundational skills and warnings of skill gaps for public-school students versus those with private AI access at home.

@cayla_bamScoop: NYC public schools' artificial-intelligence policy is coming, and it's expected to ban the use of gen AI for students in 2-K thru 8th grade for this school year, according to official slides shared in briefings this afternoon

@davidsvenWe need to redesign an education system that embraces AI to maximize learning, personalize lessons, tighten feedback loops, and adapt to the pace of the individual student.

@altryneOh hey, you know this technology that's absolutely going to be a huge part of the kids lives, advances very quickly, and could be good for them to... be familiar with? The one that can unlock their potential by providing customized education at a level 100x better than a tired teacher on a low income salary trying to handle 35 kids in a class? Yeah... let's not use that, in fact, let's prevent these kids from even knowing this exists
@kylebrussellGoing to be a massive skill gap between average kids and those whose parents use AI a ton and teach them outside of school
@ledwardsThis is basically the exact opposite recommendation of the MIT report on AI that came out this week. But I suppose it’s anyone’s guess who knows more about the risks & impacts of technology in pedagogy - a career politician with a BA or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
@traskjdAs a father who’s already taught his 7 year old to build games, research and leverage AI, I applaud this initiative. It’ll make it easier for my son to absolutely mog these other kids.
@soleioHow many NYC private schools are quietly assuring parents they’re not a part of the AI moratorium?
@ditzikowThe sad part is AI could’ve been the great equalizer in education. Wealthy kids won’t be affected by this. Private schools will teach them the latest technology. Another DSA policy that will hurt middle and lower income families the most.
