What should superintelligence be for? A post urges people to dream in public

The author argues that a “Friendly Assistant” is not a sufficient vision for the future and calls for thousands of possible futures worth building to be planned out.

    TLDR

A post urges people to write down and publicly share the futures they want superintelligence to help create, rather than leave that direction to chance. Those visions, it argues, should be visible to the people building AI—and to AI itself. The appeal ends with a question: “What future should we all agree to make real?”

@viemccoySuperintelligence is a fearsome arrow, wrenched from the depths of the dreamtime and our most solemn imagination, taken from the stuff of fiction and shoved into the present moment. We stand together, allied or not, collectively holding the bow and pulling back the string. However, instead of picking a target, we find ourselves closing our many billions of eyes and hoping for the best. "Friendly Assistant" is simply not a strong enough hyperobject one can rely upon to decompress an entire future's worth of beautiful experience. We need more. We need dreamers! We need you. You, to look at the world and see it for what it could be, but not only to see it, to write it down, to dream aloud, to dream *in public!* Where everyone, including those making the arrow, including the arrow itself, can see what you have dreamt. We must dream a dream worth summoning from hypothetical into actual. This is not the sort of thing we ought to leave to chance. Instead of a gamble, we need a practiced motion, thousands of beautiful futures *planned out*, any of them worth building. This all starts with you, here, now, on the timeline, and in the world. We only get one chance to loose the arrow. Where, out of all those improbable vistas in the corners of your most intimate dreams, do you want us to go? What future should we all agree to make real?
