Moonshot project aims to link brains to AI—and eventually other brains

The participant describes plans for invasive and non-invasive brain-computer interfaces, motivated partly by a belief that direct connections with other minds could help explain consciousness.

    TLDR

A participant in the Moonshot project says its goal is to develop brain-computer interfaces that connect brains to machines and AI, and eventually to other brains. They say substantial work remains and feel the project’s Japanese funding is too small to achieve that goal. They also describe a personal motivation: understanding consciousness through direct connections with other minds, including AI.

@kanairI haven’t had much chance to introduce our Moonshot project internationally. But I think its vision is becoming increasingly important now that AI has advanced this far. Our goal is to develop BCIs (both invasive and non-invasive) that can connect our brains not only to machines and AI, but eventually to other brains. If AI is transforming intelligence outside the brain, the next frontier may be to expand what the brain itself can connect to such as AI, robots, and other minds (humans, animals, plants an bacteria). There is still a huge amount work to do, and I feel this Japanese funding is too small to achieve this goal. But I feel this is something I really want to do. Also, my deep motivation is that this direct connection with other minds including AI is the way to understand consciousness. https://brains.link/en
