A trial participant in remission criticizes saline placebos for cancer patients

The participant describes a three-year blinded placebo trial requiring monthly travel for treatment, saying they may be receiving saline despite hoping to get the drug.

    TLDR

A trial participant says they are in remission and enrolled in a three-year, 50/50 blinded placebo trial. They want the drug but also want to advance science, crediting women in the previous generation for doing the same to help them. Being in remission makes the stakes feel tolerable, they say. Still, they argue that “no cancer patient should get saline” and express hope that embracing AI in biology could help many people.

@kate_rouchI am currently on a 50/50 blinded placebo trial that requires me to travel 1x a month for treatment and lasts for 3 years. I may just be getting saline. I’m doing it because I want the drug but even if I’m not getting it, I want to help advance the science. Women in the last generation did this to help me. And I’m in remission, so the stakes feel tolerable. But no cancer patient should get saline. It’s wrong. We can help so many people if we meet the moment for AI in bio.
