Apple rolls out its Siri AI overhaul to developers on June 8, excluding the EU and China over regulatory issues

A public beta will launch later in the year.

Apple makes it clear that Europe is itself to blame for the unavailability of Apple Intelligence.

Apple says Siri AI won’t launch on iPhone and iPad in the EU because regulators interpret the DMA as requiring Apple to give rival AI assistants broad access to private user data and control over apps.

Apple argues this would create major privacy and security risks, and says the European Commission rejected its proposed safeguards, including a "Trusted System Agent" and an 18-month rollout plan. As a result, there is currently no timeline for Siri AI on iOS and iPadOS in the EU.

“We’re deeply disappointed that our EU users won’t have Siri AI on iPhone or iPad when we share our new software releases later this year,” said Craig Federighi."

(...)

"However, given the clear dangers to EU users and the regulators’ failure to acknowledge these risks, there is currently no timeline for Siri AI’s availability in the EU on iOS and iPadOS."

EU overregulated itself. Again.

Interesting: New Apple Intelligence Siri only available on iPhone 17 Pro.

Of course not be available in the EU (god damn)

Many users criticized EU DMA rules for delaying or skipping new Siri AI features as overreaching protectionism that leaves paying customers behind, while some praised the privacy safeguards and thanked regulators for keeping the tools out.

@KWallertz @markgurman @MKBHD @DurvidImel @WVFRM 100% and I’m not buying the “regulatory issues” bs.

This smells like kissing trump’s shitty ass by “punishing” EU citizens.

And to your point, we’ve not paid the same amount. We pay MORE in the EU.

@markgurman @MKBHD @DurvidImel Siri AI not coming to the EU is literally a scam. I bought the same product and payed the same amount of money for a far worse product. Please talk about this on the @WVFRM. (I live in Sweden)

@markgurman This is pathetic. We paid the same amount and don't have access to tons of features. Apple should give discounts or refunds to EU users.

@kimmonismus "europe is to blame" Meanwhile OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft have been shipping models for the past 3 years.

Right.

@markgurman That's a shame. Such emphasis on Private Cloud Compute and Privacy but still not eligible for adoption in EU. For years now, EU users are not feeling the love from Apple. Meanwhile Google and Gemini are everywhere.

@markgurman The UK is the worst place to live especially if you want proper tech if you want to have proper tech usage, then live in the US this is all because of the UK and the government wanting control over peoples privacy and wanna control what we think

Economies of scale and vertical integration are hard to beat, but usually also translate into lower prices.

The EU meanwhile, keeps losing competitiveness to over-regulation. The pattern is clearest in tech, but it runs through heavy industry as well, for example, the German automotive industry, which is increasingly getting outcompeted by Chinese manufacturers and Tesla.

At some point, the convenient narrative becomes that the US and China have simply grown "too competitive." The harder truth is that the EU may finally have to confront how uncompetitive it has allowed itself to become.

And restrictive AI and robotics regulation, combined with a substantial lack of the hardware layers needed to scale these technologies, high energy prices, and finance structures, are certainly not going to help the EU to become more competitive in the next decade.

@markgurman . From this @Apple article it appears the restrictions are for EU member countries only and the UK looks like it will have the full beta of #iOS27 .
