Does AI doom talk earn status or disapproval?

One post blames Silicon Valley status-seeking for stifling candid debate. A quote-post challenges that view, arguing that even acknowledging a chance of catastrophe draws disapproval inside AI labs.

    TLDR

The disagreement centers on “p(doom),” an estimate of the chance of AI catastrophe. One post argues that Silicon Valley’s in-group pressures discourage people from speaking their minds. A quote-post disputes the idea that doom concerns confer status at labs, saying even acknowledging that risk draws consternation. It argues that employees don’t want to explain to their families why the products they build might “curtail all value in the world.”

@tszzlthis is not right having any pdoom at all earns consternation at a lab. these are tech employees building products. they don’t want to have to explain to their family, or god forbid, some crazy attacker, why their products might curtail all value in the world
@TaylorLorenzThere is enormous groupthink in Silicon Valley and once a novel idea takes hold, people w/o power will not challenge it. Many founders don't want to step on the wrong toes for fear it will affect hiring (big concern rn w AI) or future funding rounds. This is not a new concept
@beffjezosAI Doomer is the new woke in SF Having high p(Doom) is like being aware of extremely niche issues of tiny subgroups in terms of social status boost Signals how "thoughtful" you are
@xlr8harder@tszzl i mean, it's kind of explicitly low status at anthropic, right? since their culture fit will largely not hire skeptics, as I understand it, meaning their status is zero?
