After roughly 18 months and tens of millions in equipment spend, SemiAnalysis has opened its STEEL teardown lab in Hillsboro, Oregon, and immediately published its first paid analysis comparing SMIC N+3 metal pitch and density against TSMC N6 and Intel 18A using a HiSilicon Kirin 9030 die.

The move positions the six-year-old, founder-run firm as a direct competitor to TechInsights in the advanced-node reverse-engineering market, with an emphasis on datacenter and AI chips plus selective public releases.
SMIC N+3 shows 32.5 nm minimum metal pitch and roughly 113 MTr/mm² density, yet exact service rates, subscription tiers, and the lab’s full throughput capacity remain undisclosed beyond early datacenter client work.
Many users congratulated the SemiAnalysis team on launching the STEEL chip teardown lab because they viewed the new Oregon facility as impressive progress.
