Announcing an AI policy paper on September 18, its author warned that Britain would have no leverage over frontier AI development under current trends, pointing to limited data centre capacity, few credible expansion plans and high energy costs. The proposed strategy has three parts: fix the grid and planning to support AI infrastructure; reform regulatory, labour and talent barriers to business adoption; and build an adaptable state. That last strand includes a tax base that can withstand labour-market changes, public services that use AI, and capacity to weather geopolitical disruption.
