TLDR

Yann LeCun recalls meeting Marvin Minsky at a reception during his first US conference in June 1986. He says Minsky was surprised by his experiment training a neural network to multiply two binary numbers. In a reply, another researcher recalled attending ICNN ten years later and encountering early work on SVMs, recurrent neural networks and Bayes nets.

Nando de Freitas@NandoDFThanks so much for sharing this Yann @ylecun -- 10 years later, June 1996, I attended ICNN, and instead I was given a pre-print of a new book by a Russian scientist on something called SVMs 😂 I also met Stephen Grossberg of ART and he was amazing. I was also met students that were super keen on RNNs and saw a brilliant presentation by David Heckerman on this new thing called Bayes nets.2h
