    TLDR

Joe Benton said on September 11 that he had left Anthropic’s safety team two weeks earlier and would join METR to independently evaluate AI risks. He argues that AI companies are underinvesting in safety and warns that the technology could pose extinction-level risks. He wants companies to disclose progress toward AI that improves itself, report safety incidents and near-misses, meet minimum safety standards and obtain independent guarantees that those standards are being met.

Quoting his announcement, a user who says they are awaiting trial for nonviolent action to stop superintelligence development asked Benton to submit a brief or testify about what they call an “AI emergency.”

@wolflovesmelonThank you Joe Benton for doing the right thing! My friend @WyndKaufmyn recently got out of jail for nonviolent action to stop superintelligence development which risks catastrophic harm to humanity, a project which you helped to facilitate in service to your former employer. The judge in her case refused to acknowledge that we are in an AI emergency and denied her petition to let the jury deliberate on whether the harm she intended to prevent justified her actions. I am awaiting trial for the same actions to stop dangerous AI development. Are you willing to provide a brief to the judge explaining the reality and nature of the AI emergency we are in, or testify to it in court? If so I would like to invite you to communicate with my attorney.
