GPT-5.6 spotted in Codex GitHub repo
A pull request in OpenAI's public Codex repository reveals references to an unreleased GPT-5.6 model
Story Overview
OpenAI's Codex repository picked up a pull request that wires in handling for a GPT-5.6 model, explicitly keeping it selectable by users while blocking any chance it becomes the automatic default during staged rollouts.
Model selection logic gets updated to skip the new version
The diff adds a NEVER_DEFAULT_MODELS list and tweaks functions like can_be_default and default_model_from_available so GPT-5.6 stays out of auto-selection or fallback paths, with fresh tests verifying the restriction.
Details on release remain under wraps
No timing, pricing, specs or availability info for GPT-5.6 appears in the PR or linked sources, so any broader rollout plans stay unknown for now.
Positive users express excitement over GPT-5.6 references spotted in the OpenAI Codex GitHub repo as a sign of an imminent release, while negative users object to the prospect of even higher costs pricing out developers.

this suggests to me that GPT-5.6 could be an even more expensive/larger model than GPT-5.5

@scaling01 Reading between the lines on public statements, I think 5.4 was big, 5.5 smaller, 5.6 back to big. 6.0 gargantuan.

@scaling01 openai bros gotta stop leaking the models they're using in codex via these PRs lmfao

but it's also regarded that they don't have any automated checks when you push

@scaling01 I mean we all know it’s coming and of course internally they would be using it, whether we get it any time soon is the debate

@scaling01 gpt - 5.6 already running the backrooms huh wonder when we get the golden ticket for the main floor

@scaling01 bro waat??

@scaling01 👀👀👀

@scaling01 It's delayed as per leaks

@scaling01 Wait, 5.6? That specific version number is wild. Gotta dig into that repo commit history now.

@scaling01 a bigger GPT-5.6 just makes the cost constraint sharper.
kimi-k2.7-code already beats frontier models on ml engineering under a cost ceiling.

@scaling01 HUGE

@ZachyAshworth @scaling01 every tweet based around "GPT 5.6 is delayed" is stemming from the same tweet. a tweet that's just a rumor engagement bait most likely.
annoying that they do this and confuse ppl lol, would rather us just be excited for the new model

@scaling01 interesting, looks like there's more to explore here

@scaling01 Is it still coming this week? What you think?

@scaling01 this is getting interesting.

@scaling01 NUMBER INCREASED

@AndrewCurran_ @scaling01 5.5 is more expensive than 5.4 iirc, so it’s probably bigger
