The case for playability over spectacle in AI-generated games

A user argues that most AI-generated games look great on video but aren't fun to play for more than five minutes.

    TLDR

A user says they love the new wave of AI-generated games but argues that most look better in videos than they feel to play. They point to chess, Tetris, hide and seek, and the first Magic: The Gathering set as examples they say wouldn't go viral on Twitter. In their view, AI can make games like those; the challenge is cultivating the taste to ask whether a game is worth playing for hours or merely looks cool.

@TylerAltermanSo: I’m absolutely loving the new wave of AI-generated games, but let’s be real. Most of it is Twitter slop: it looks amazing on video, but when you actually play it, the game sucks to play for more than 5 minutes. It’s like a lot of NYC fine dining where it’s perfectly optimized for instagram but still tastes worse than your grandma’s lasagna. You know what are great games? Chess, Tetris, hide and seek, the first Magic: The Gathering set and they would not go viral on twitter. AI is capable of making things like this; the issue is human taste. We must cultivate it and ask ourselves: would I play this for hours or does it merely look cool?6h
