@TechmemeGoogle says free Gemini users will be limited to the 3.5 Flash-Lite model from October 9, while Plus subscribers will be limited to 3.5 Flash-Lite and 3.6 Flash (@technacity / 9to5Google) (Visit Techmeme dot com for the link and full context!)2h
@aakashguptaGoogle made Gemini 78% cheaper to run in a single year. It still can't afford its free users. Starting Oct 9, free accounts get Flash-Lite only. The $4.99 AI Plus tier loses the Pro model entirely. Access to Google's best model now starts at $19.99 a month. Google has the cheapest inference in the industry. They design their own chips and run their own data centers, which means they skip the Nvidia margin every other lab pays. If anyone could keep intelligence free, it's them. The problem is demand ate the entire efficiency gain and kept going. The Gemini app is at 950 million monthly users. Daily actives tripled in a year. API traffic went from 10 billion tokens a minute to 22 billion in about six months. Alphabet raised this year's infrastructure budget to as much as $205 billion and free cash flow still went negative last quarter. So every free user running Flash was burning compute Google needs for training Gemini 4 and serving customers who pay. Rationing the giveaway tier was the cheapest capacity they could buy. And if the lowest-cost producer in AI is load-shedding free users, every free tier at a lab paying full price for Nvidia chips is running on investor money and a timer.2h
