We are banning social media access for under 16s.
These days kids must find their feet in a world where technology intrudes into every area of their life.
I just can’t let that go on anymore. So we’re giving children their childhoods back.
Starmer's announcement layers an Australia-style platform ban for under-16s with extra curbs on supposedly safer services, such as blocking stranger chats and livestreams, after a consultation drew over 116,000 responses focused on mental health and screen time.

Age-assurance tools required for enforcement still lack defined standards, leaving room for data breaches and expanded surveillance that experts already flag as rushed and poorly modeled.
No prior impact study examined how the rules might cut off community access for vulnerable teens, so the displacement risk to unregulated corners of the internet remains an explicit unknown.
Positive users back Keir Starmer's social media ban for under-16s as essential child safeguarding against addiction and harm, while negative users dismiss it as a smokescreen for control or attack Starmer personally.

I have kids who are close to being teens and I support this move by the UK, and wish more countries would follow.
Social media, IAP games, and many others are full of dark and addictive patterns - and private companies have zero incentive to be considerate for kids’ development

@naval Social media makes a whole society addicted to it, dumb and depressed. Better late than never to take them down or regulate them. And there are still dumb people being mad about it.

@naval Unfortunately not.
If I could afford to, I would now leave.

@joshhfm @naval It also makes the whole society hyper connected.
Hm.

not a free country but where do you draw the line?
the thing is, nothing is really “free” in the world we live in, even the space we take up on this planet
and when 99% of people are dealing with mental health issues because their brains are overloaded with information, have disconnected from each other, have no real social skills, constantly compare themselves to everyone… when people haven’t learned to control their own minds and are basically getting pulled by it, social media just multiplies all of that
not saying I think this guy is doing it for the right reasons or that there isn’t some agenda behind it
but social media does make most(not all) people “dumber” in practice, and that’s a fact

@naval Privacy, Liberty Concerns about this are all valid but, there is a lot of evidence to suggest it's causing problems:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Anxious_Generation

@naval The state always sells control as protection. Parents lose authority, bureaucrats gain it, and teenagers find the workaround in a week.

@imnatmessy @naval and that is needed?

@naval Yes ! A welcome idea Social media is killing the attention span Of this children They could barely study for an hour with absolute attention ..
If we don’t put a lid on it ? I won’t what it would be like in 15 years from now.

@naval The performance of European officials is exactly the same as that of officials of the Islamic Republic, just as clueless and just as left-leaning.
But this one! Starmer! in my view, represents something close to a betrayal, a traitor at its core.
My kids don’t have smartphones - and it’s in good part thanks going to a school where parents voted to ban them, so practically no kid has it (no social anxiety)
I still see how terrible these predatory IAP games are, and social media is even worse in creating FOMO and anxiety
I have kids who are close to being teens and I support this move by the UK, and wish more countries would follow.

@naval Note his attire- parent to parent conversation

@naval To be honest kids don’t need social media, and it’s pretty toxic for them
Life was good without social media

@naval Have those suppressing speech ever been the good guys ?

I would like to share my 2 cents on this.
You my, respected friend, right now acting like a 'Phupo or Bua' and your take may be somewhat accurate depending upon your own past experiences. But that's not your problem to give your take on. It's not your country (Family) heck you are not even a citizen of this country you are giving your take on their policies.
Why don't you try to give this opinion in fixing what's wrong with your country of origin? Or the country your currently citzen of? I am sure they would gladly accept what you have to say about this (sarcasm). I have out most respect for what you have shared with the world but don't put your nose in everyone business.
First of all, it creates noise when a figure like you say random sh*t like 'not a free country' and secondly, again it's not your business to begin with.
@naval @NavalismHQ

@naval Freedom is being brainwashed into peak consumerism and depression from an early age by algorithms designed by some of the world's smartest people?
Just common sense what UK is doing.

@naval This guy sucks

@naval Britain had to fall first and hardest - punishment for spawning modernity.
Like the way you shoot the leader of the wolf pack first to demoralize the others.
