    TLDR

Davidad posted on X a pair of attributed statements that capture a circular disagreement among AI safety researchers. One line, credited to MIRI, states the field is too confused to solve agent foundations well and must influence human institutions first. The next line, credited to Richard Ngo, states the field is too confused to influence human institutions well and must solve agent foundations first. The post supplies only these two lines with no additional context, confirmation, or linked sources.

@davidadMIRI: the field is just too confused to solve agent foundations well. we need to influence human institutions first @RichardMCNgo: the field is just too confused to influence human institutions well. we need to solve agent foundations first
@IvanVendrovok but let's be real, we have lots of historical examples of influencing human institutions well, from the montreal protocol on CFCs to smallpox eradication to british abolitionism to the "cooperation revolutions" of double-entry bookkeeping & calvinism. progress on agent foundations could help us design radically better institutions, especially in the presence of powerful non-human intelligences, but it's not like "influencing human institutions" is this radically new problem. we have playbooks
