A dispute over AI doomsday warnings and climate risk

Fox News quotes former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon agreeing with Trump that global-warming doomsday scenarios were “overplayed,” while warning that AI is advancing too quickly to leave time to respond.

    TLDR

Fox News says former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon told Sean Hannity that past catastrophic warnings amounted to “fear mongering,” but argued AI was different because of its rapid advance: “We won't have time to respond to it before it's too late.”

The comparison drew criticism. One commenter called AI extinction warnings a distraction from serious present-day threats and accused their proponents of downplaying climate risk. Another said effective altruists had compared them to a climate denier while themselves portraying AI as a greater existential risk than climate change.

@timnitGebruI find it hilarious that the effective altruists' talking point was that I am the equivalent of a climate denier because I knew from way back that THEIR talking point was that "AI" is a higher existential risk than climate change. Peter Thiel, who was one of their keynote speakers, even said that all the way in 2012/2013 and was all over the headlines.
@NathanJRobinsonOk, so now the "AI will kill us all" crowd are actively trying to downplay climate risk. This evidence-free science-fiction is distracting us from the actual serious threats humanity faces right now.
@TaylorLorenzRT @NathanJRobinson: Ok, so now the "AI will kill us all" crowd are actively trying to downplay climate risk. This evidence-free science-fi…
@xriskologyThis confirms that Jacob Coxon is willing to speak confidently about things he doesn’t understand. This should make you more skeptical of his AI apocalypse claims.
