It's a good question! I think it's been in the DNA of many of the AI labs for a while where their founding was as much about anxiety/apprehension of the technology as about enthusiasm (e.g. OpenAI forming initially partially due to fear of Google controlling AGI, Anthropic forming due to fear of OpenAI, etc). AI researchers are also in the privileged position of being in a competitive enough market for their labor where companies want to compete over being a place where employees are free to speak their mind and discuss their concerns. So maybe in some other industries employees also have concerns but are less in a position to say so. I also think that folks within the AI companies have a more visceral sense of how fast things are moving and how strong the competitive pressure is to cut corners without effective regulation. The amount of money and competitive pressure and speed does seem unique even relevant to other areas. Anyway curious if other folks have better hypothesis or if the AI industry is not as unique as I think it is.
