@littmathI've written an essay on how I think the mathematics profession should adapt to highly capable AI systems. It's hosted here on "Proofs and Prompts": https://proofsandprompts.com/2026/09/14/a-beginning-for-mathematics/ though you should also feel free to complain/comment on my website here: https://www.daniellitt.com/blog/2026/9/13/a-beginning-for-mathematics/

@docmilanfarSummary: As AI systems become capable of autonomously generating proofs, producing math papers is no longer a reliable measure of human expertise. To adapt and thrive, the math community must shift its focus from churning out theorems to fostering and evaluating deep human understanding through live communication, seminars, and rigorous oral defenses.

@ziv_ravidThis week in the Information Bottleneck we will host Daniel Litt (@littmath, University of Toronto), who was one of the the loudest skeptics of AI for math. In 2025 he bet that AI wouldn't write top-tier math papers by 2030. Now he says he expects to lose. He just published "A beginning for mathematics," arguing that once AI can produce a strong result for the price of a nice dinner, math has to stop rewarding papers and start rewarding real understanding. We'll ask him what that looks like for PhD students and why anyone would still want to become a mathematician. Drop questions below and we'll try to ask it.
