    TLDR

Sam Altman said in an interview that 38,000 ChatGPT queries use the same water as one almond grown in California. @TheChiefNerd posted a clip of the remark. @davidsven called water-waste concerns brainwashing. @rohanpaul_ai added that modern data centers no longer rely on evaporative cooling. Other accounts posted jokes, such as promising to eat fewer almonds for more queries or claiming one query per almond. The posts show the conversation around the clip but contain no independent confirmation of the water figure.

@TheChiefNerdSAM ALTMAN: “For every 38,000 ChatGPT queries, that is the same amount of water that is used in the production of a single almond in California.”
@davidsvenWhen people cite water waste as their concern with AI, know that they’ve been brainwashed.
@rohanpaul_aiSam Altman explains how little water AI uses. "Every time you run a single ChatGPT query, it’s like you run your shower for 6 hours. For every 38,000 ChatGPT queries, that is the same amount of water that is used in the production of a single almond in California. It is true that data centers at one point used evaporative cooling, but they have not done that in a long time. If you look at a modern, very large data center, it uses the equivalent amount of water as an office building, in terms of people running the sinks, toilets, and whatever." ---- From "Sources Podcast and Alex Heath (@alexeheath)" YouTube channel, (full video link in comment)
@joecarlsonshowIf people cared about water usage they wouldn’t buy almonds. It takes about 1.7 gallons of water *per single almond* to grow in California. That means a literal handful of almost can cost 30-40 gallons of water. This means that one handful of almonds uses equivalent water as about 38 years of the average users AI queries. Does anyone protest almonds? Of course not. Because people weren’t told on TikTok to hate almond farms.

@krishnanrohitIf I promise to eat less almonds, can I get more ChatGPT queries, @sama?

@NickADobosRookie numbers. We gotta pump those up. My prompts are 1 query per almond.
