Few things that I found interesting about frontier labs in China from @natolambert’s trip report: - Far less philosophical discussion about AI risks, societal impacts, or economics often dismissed as a “category error.”One researcher referenced Dan Wang: China is “run by engineers, relative to the lawyers of the U.S.” - Labs huge on internships: students are deeply integrated into core research teams as peers, quick adoption of new paradigms (MoE scaling, RL, agents). Top US labs (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic) rarely offer such internships. - Almost no mature external data industry. Labs and companies build their own data environments and labeling pipelines (including RL training environments). - Heavy reliance on Nvidia chips as the gold standard for training, with significant access constraints creating “desperation.”

Inspired by your trip, I recently also traveled quite a bit in the summer visiting AI labs in Silicon Valley and in China. I had a lot of unexpected observations. Maybe I should also find time to share my experience.
