Training compute for models shared on the Hugging Face Hub estimated at close to $1 billion

Thom Wolf estimates that Meta, Nvidia, Alibaba, DeepSeek, Moonshot, Mistral and about 30 other labs have shared models representing close to $1 billion in training compute on the Hugging Face Hub. He calls the estimate a floor: about half comes from official compute figures, the rest from educated guesses, and roughly 900,000 community fine-tunes are not counted.
