    TLDR

Matthew Sun announced that his article is now out in The Atlantic. The piece calls for abandoning the term lab when describing the AI industry’s most powerful corporations. Sun states the word should be reserved for organizations whose primary activity is scientific research. The tweet presents this stance as a lexical call to arms. Sun identifies himself as a software engineer whose writing has appeared in The Atlantic and other outlets. The announcement stands as the only evidence supplied about the article’s content and timing.

@MatthewDSunAI firms certainly do research and employ plenty of respected scientists. But it makes little sense to refer to them first and foremost as scientific institutions, as they’ve drifted further towards extracting enormous profits, lobbying governments, and reshaping the economy.
@Tyler_A_HarperThis is exactly right. I’ve been losing my mind watching some tech journalists breathlessly parrot “[Insert Tech CEO] says they are on the cusp of AGI!” as though this is a neutral statement of fact delivered by a scientist rather than a sales pitch from a guy selling a product.

@tallinzenOnly marginally related but also if you’re the Head of Apocalypse Prevention in one of these megacorps perhaps it’s time to ditch the anime avatar and start tweeting under your real name
