Yoav Goldberg calls citations antiquated for AI systems
Yoav Goldberg, professor of computer science at Bar-Ilan University and Research Director of AI2-Israel, replied to Talia Ringer that citations feel antiquated because AI systems do not cite sources. The comment appeared in a thread discussing updates to bibliography tools such as DOI-based fetching in .bib files. Talia Ringer expressed disapproval. Pasquale Minervini quote-tweeted the exchange with an image of a printed book page showing humorous footnotes.
@TaliaRinger i think citations feel quite antiquated to begin with. AIs dont cite their sources, why should we?
So now that the internet exists and stuff, can someone invent a system in which all we need to do is list the DOI in our .bib files and it will fetch the correct citation in full? What we currently do feels pretty antiquated
@yoavgo Yikes lol
