    TLDR

Gary Marcus posted a message citing a scoop from The Information. The post states that Anthropic has entered into major commitments for computing resources. It notes the company has not reached stable profitability. Marcus compares the size of these commitments to the scale of the firm's earnings in its most profitable quarter to date. He describes the situation as part of continued heavy spending patterns across the artificial intelligence industry. The message includes a graphic attachment showing related details.

@validapauAnthropic’s total compute bill has long been a mystery, and became a key focus for IPO investors. We tried to do the math, which brings us to an estimated $517B+ worth of deals and ~14.8gw+ in agreed capacity since Oct. 25 More details below + comparison w/ OpenAI:
@GaryMarcus🚨scoop from @theinformation: Anthropic (which has yet to established stable profitability) has committed to $517 billion in compute deals - almost 3x what they had previously told investors. by my estimate that’s about 1000x their most (only?) profitable* quarter thus far. the AI money bonfire continues. 💰🔥💨 — *even that may have depended heavily on a one-time SpaceX subsidy.
@rohanpaul_aiThe Information just reported Anthropic has lined up at least 14.8 GW of new compute since October, potentially costing as much as $517 B over the next decade. Anthropic’s annualized revenue has reportedly passed $65 B, ahead of OpenAI’s $40+B, yet OpenAI says it has roughly 2X as much compute capacity planned. To note, Claude now spans AWS Trainium, Google TPUs and Nvidia hardware, with up to 2GW of AMD systems planned from 2027. Anthropic's compute-suppliers are increasingly financing the company that is committing to buy their infrastructure. Amazon announced $5B of new investment, with up to $20B more, alongside a compute commitment exceeding $100B; Microsoft and Nvidia committed up to $5B and $10B while Anthropic agreed to buy $30B of Azure capacity. Those arrangements help suppliers secure a huge customer and help Anthropic finance expansion. These arrangement also makes utilization and serving margins more informative than either fundraising totals or compute commitments viewed alone.
